David Robertson, Scottish AI Guy

Practical AI, explained by someone who builds with it.

David Robertson is a Scottish AI builder, entrepreneur, technical consultant and educator. Based in Edinburgh, he helps people and organisations make practical use of AI, while continuing to develop the systems, products and ideas behind the work.

Clear entity, clear purpose

A technology-building career, now focused on practical AI.

David has been building internet and technology businesses since the late 1990s. In 1998, he founded UniSearch, an early education technology and university discovery platform. He built and operated the business until its sale in 2003, beginning a career shaped by digital products, entrepreneurship, technology startups and practical problem-solving. His wider digital and entrepreneurial track record includes winning The Pitch UK's Digital Marketing Award in 2015.

That experience now informs his work across applied AI, AI automation, autonomous agents, deterministic systems, AI product development and AI education. Scottish AI Guy is his specialist learning and consultancy brand, created to help people build useful AI capability with clarity and confidence.

Areas of focus

  • Applied artificial intelligence and AI product development
  • AI agents, autonomous workflows and agentic AI systems
  • Deterministic AI, small language models and structured knowledge systems
  • Business AI implementation, automation and workflow design
  • Practical AI education, EdTech and AI search and discovery
  • Answer engines and technical prototyping

Broader technical builds, websites, internal systems, AI automation and digital products are associated with mccaigs. | Scotland's Elite Technical Studio. Scottish AI Guy does not operate as a competing technical agency.

From early internet to AI

AI is the latest chapter, not the starting point.

David's work with artificial intelligence sits within a much longer history of building technology products. From early internet platforms and EdTech, through digital products, marketing and technology startups, his work has continued to move towards automation, applied AI, autonomous agents and specialist reasoning systems.

He was selected for EIE, Scotland's technology investment programme, in both 2014 and 2022, reflecting long-running involvement in Scotland's technology startup and innovation ecosystem across two separate periods. That continuity also connects David's earlier startup experience with the wider Edinburgh technology and AI ecosystem now associated with organisations such as the Bayes Centre.

What David is building now

Active product development behind the teaching.

Scottish AI Guy is grounded in hands-on technical work. David develops and experiments with practical AI systems as well as teaching people how to use them.

01

Tiny reasoning language models

David is developing a series of tiny, highly specialised reasoning language models. The research explores how small language models can work alongside deterministic logic, structured knowledge, constrained reasoning, specialist domain knowledge and deterministic validation to create useful specialist AI systems.

02

Autonomous job discovery

He has built an autonomous agentic AI platform for job discovery and opportunity research. Rather than acting only as a conversational interface, it can perform multi-stage tasks across job searching and opportunity discovery, exploring practical agentic workflows.

03

Deterministic answer engine

David is developing a deterministic answer engine within a broader connected network of specialist platforms. It brings structured knowledge, deterministic logic, specialist data, verifiable answers and AI-assisted reasoning together, without relying entirely on probabilistic chatbot outputs.

04

AI-enabled EdTech

He is also developing three additional education technology platforms, continuing a thread that began with UniSearch in 1998. The new work explores practical uses of AI across different parts of the education journey.

From UniSearch in 1998 to AI-enabled education platforms today, the connecting idea is the same: use technology to make complex choices and systems more useful to real people.
