What are AI Skills?

AI Skills are reusable packages of instructions, examples, resources and sometimes code that help an AI complete a defined type of task more consistently. A Skill can preserve a workflow, output structure, checking method and specialist guidance so the user does not have to rebuild the process in every conversation. Skills do not make the underlying model infallible, grant permissions or remove the need for human review.

An AI Skill is a reusable way of teaching an AI how to approach a particular kind of work. It can contain instructions, examples, reference material, a required output format and, on supported platforms, scripts or code.

The important part is repeatability. A Skill is intended to preserve a method so the user does not have to remember and paste every instruction into every new conversation.

How is a Skill different from a prompt?

A prompt normally tells the AI what to do now. A Skill describes how a defined type of work should be handled whenever it is relevant.

A prompt might say:

Review this report and tell me what is missing.

A useful report-review Skill could define:

  • the required sections;
  • the evidence hierarchy;
  • the questions the reviewer must answer;
  • the difference between a missing fact and a weak explanation;
  • the output table;
  • the claims that require a citation;
  • the conditions that require human escalation.

The prompt starts a task. The Skill carries the method.

What can a Skill contain?

OpenAI's current guidance says a Skill can include instructions, examples, supporting resources, reusable steps, scripts and code. After installation, ChatGPT can automatically use one or more Skills when they are helpful.

A well-designed Skill may include:

  1. a clear name and description;
  2. trigger examples that show when it applies;
  3. the workflow to follow;
  4. templates or reference files;
  5. rules protecting facts and sensitive fields;
  6. tests or quality checks;
  7. failure behaviour for missing or conflicting information;
  8. guidance on when approval is required.

Skills, apps, plugins and agents

A Skill supplies reusable instructions and workflow knowledge. An app connects the AI to an external service or source. A product-specific plugin may package capabilities using that provider's own rules. An Agent Plugin, under the open Agent Plugins 1.0 standard, can package portable Skills and MCP server definitions in one predictable directory. An agent can use instructions, files, tools and Skills while working towards a goal. The separate guide to what an AI agent is explains when that flexibility is useful and when ordinary automation is the better choice.

These capabilities can work together, but they are not interchangeable.

For example, a customer-enquiry Skill may define how to classify an enquiry and draft a safe response. A connected app may provide access to the helpdesk. An agent may coordinate the steps. The app's permissions still determine what information can be read or changed, and a person may still need to approve the reply.

Do Skills make AI more accurate?

They can improve consistency by giving the model better instructions, approved context and a defined checking process. They do not guarantee accuracy.

A Skill cannot correct an outdated source it has been told to trust. It cannot prove a claim merely by expressing it confidently. It cannot remove the variability of a generative model.

Accuracy still depends on:

  • the quality and freshness of the source material;
  • the clarity of the task boundary;
  • the suitability of the model and tools;
  • representative testing;
  • validation with deterministic checks where possible;
  • human review when consequences matter.

Can more than one Skill be used together?

Yes, on supported platforms. OpenAI says ChatGPT can use one or more helpful Skills. Anthropic's API documentation also describes Skills being composed for more complex work.

A practical combination might include:

  • a company report structure;
  • a spreadsheet analysis method;
  • a brand voice Skill;
  • a final factual and citation check.

Composition works best when each Skill has a clear job. Overlapping instructions can produce conflict, and loading irrelevant Skills can make the process harder to understand.

Are Skills the same across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini?

No. The broad idea is shared, but provider implementations differ.

OpenAI describes reusable Skills across eligible ChatGPT workspaces and other supported OpenAI products. Anthropic documents custom Skill bundles centred on a SKILL.md file for its API and coding products. Google now provides user-facing Skills in Gemini chat, where they replace Gems, as well as modular Skills within parts of its developer agent tooling. The guide to Gemini Skills for business explains the rollout and migration dates.

A business should not assume that every package built for one provider will install unchanged in another. The Agent Plugins 1.0 standard now provides a portable structure for Skills and MCP server definitions across compatible clients. That reduces some repackaging, but it does not standardise installation, permissions, sandboxing, trust or each client's execution behaviour.

Preserve the underlying workflow, reference material and tests. Use the portable standard where it is genuinely supported, then review the permissions and client-specific behaviour in every environment where the package will run.

What makes a good AI Skill?

A good Skill is narrow enough to test, useful often enough to maintain and explicit about its limits.

Before using one, ask:

  1. What exact outcome should this Skill produce?
  2. Which facts or sources does it rely on?
  3. What happens when required information is missing?
  4. Which fields must remain unchanged?
  5. Which actions need approval?
  6. Who owns updates?
  7. How will we test whether a new version is better?

If those questions have no answer, the Skill may only be a long prompt wearing a product label.
